This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
This match was drawn with Devon winning on first innings. Cornwall followed on 118 runs behind and Moore and Knight added 51 runs for the tenth wickets to save the visitors from defeat. When the ninth wicket fell in the Cornwall second innings, the visitors were still 7 runs behind. Ten minutes remained for play when the Cornwall second innings ended, but Brunskill decided Devon would not bat as the 45 runs needed for victory could not be obtained. Rain prevented any cricket after 12.10 pm on the first day, with play being abandoned for the day at 4.00 pm. For Devon, the debutant Hawksworth took 7 wickets for 22 runs in the Cornwall first innings. Cruwys top scored with 41, which included 2 fours. In the Devon innings, Bentley and Davies added 50 runs for the eighth wicket. For Cornwall, there were 2 fours in Moore's 58 not out. On the second morning at the start of play, Sturt was not on the ground to resume his innings so Brunskill accompanied Cruwys to the wicket. Sturt was allowed by the Cornwall captain to resume his innings at the fall of the fifth wicket and he was responsible for scoring 16 of the 17 runs added for the sixth wicket. Newspaper reports indicate that receipts amounted to around £12, and a collection for Aston yielded £2-10s. It was the first time that a championship match had been played at the ground.
