Wanganui arrived in Palmerston North without their captain, WAJ Gibson, who was expected to arrive on the afternoon train from Wellington but he did not arrive so they had to bat only 10 players in their first innings although they had used a substitute fielder in the Manawatu first innings
Gibson had still not arrived on the second day so Wanganui played the entire match with 10 players
