The wicket being composed of shale (the coconut matting having been removed) was subjected to a torrential downpour. As a result the wicket was a quagmire so copious amounts of gasoline were applied to the surface and the whole set alight. When the flames were extinguished the wet matting was reinstalled and the game continued.
