In the MCC second innings the final pair of Jardine and Sutcliffe were batting; with about 20 minutes to go before stumps, Jardine hit a ball in the air and as a fieldsman ran in to
take the catch, umpire Pearce suddenly stuck out his hand and caught the ball.
Asked later to explain himself Pearce said he was not pleased with the way the game was being played 'like a picnic' and had resolved to do whatever he could to ensure the match continued through to stumps. He felt the spectators were entitled to see a full day's play.
Pearce was severely reprimanded for interfering with the match. MCC captain Chapman said it was 'gross impertinence'.
