Mead was cut over the eye by a ball from Douglas in the first innings and was going to retire hurt but as the last three Hampshire players had missed a train and had not arrived this would have ended the innings. The Essex captain allowed a delay of 10 minutes by which time Mead was able to continue batting and the absent players arrived.
