West Kent had Bedster, Harris and Stevens as given men, Stevens not to bowl by agreement. Couchman was possibly from Seal or Ightham. The Kent amateur Stephen Amherst made his first appearance in 'great' matches. There is some doubt about the spelling of his surname: there was a prominent aristocratic family, to which it is assumed he was related, that definitely spelled the name as 'Amherst', and the matter appears to be settled by Haygarth's use of the same spelling in quoting the inscription on the family tablet in West Farleigh church. However, a number of other sources give 'Amhurst'.
