With James, John and W Wells all appearing for Surrey, there is considerable uncertainty about some of the dismissals. All sources are clear that Smith was bowled by John Wells. SB also ascribes to John Wells the dismissals of Hammond, Barton and Bennett, but its source for this is unclear. Britcher gives them to 'Mr Wells' but lists both numbers 8 and 10 in the Surrey team as 'Mr Wells' without any differentiation, so it is not clear who is meant. The Sporting Magazine also gives these three dismissals to 'Mr Wells' but distinguishes in the Surrey team list between W Wells and 'Mr Wells', i.e. presumably James Wells, and this has been accepted. In view of this, SM's version of England (2) has also been preferred to Britcher, who has Whitehead 2, Barton 2. Smith, in the England side, has sometimes been identified with TA Smith but the contemporary sources do not designate him as 'Esq' so a likelier candidate is J Smith of Kent, still prominent in good quality club matches. Regarding J Tanner, see the note under Gibbons v Whitehead, 19 May 1800.
