Hampshire had Dorset as a given man. Surrey had Miller and Minchin as given men. The score in the Reading Mercury is preferred because it gives much the fullest available version of this famous match in which Small made the first recorded century in top cricket. Although, like other versions, it unfortunately contains no details of dismissals, it gives a complete final innings; it also increases Small's score from 136 to 138 among many other changes, all of which, in view of the relative fulness of the score, are accepted for consistency. Other versions of the score give three days only with the Surrey (2) total as 78-3, suggesting that Surrey conceded. The RM score shows that the game continued on a fourth day, which has been assumed to be 17 July (16 July was a Sunday): it was certainly during that week because the RM score appeared on 24 July. Nothing in RM contradicts the statement in the General Evening Post that play on day 3 continued until 8pm, when it must have got too dark to continue, and 78-3 has been accepted as the score at that point, with Palmer 22* and Tankerville, Yalden and Attfield the men out.
SB says it is 'believed Small carried his bat' but this is unconfirmed.
