Portrait of Phil Clift

Phil made his Glamorgan debut in 1937, against Kent at Tonbridge, and he went on to score 6,055 first-class runs including 7 centuries.

In 1948 Phil was also a member of the Glamorgan team that won the County Championship. Phil is standing second left on the back row in the side that played Yorkshire under Johnnie Clay`s captaincy (deputising for Wilf Wooller).

In 1948 Phil was rated by Sir Don Bradman as being one of the most promising young batsmen in the country.

In 1955 Phil retired to become the captain of the 2nd XI and the county coach.

In 1977 Phil succeeded Wilf Wooller as Glamorgan secretary – this photo shows Wilf on his last day in the club`s offices in High Street, Cardiff.

Phil retired as Secretary in 1982, but he remained his involvement by scoring for the county`s 2nd XI and youth teams.

Phil regularly attended the annual gathering of the Glamorgan Former Players Association, as here in 1994, standing on the right, with Jim Pleass, Wilf Wooller, Harold Dickenson and Viv Jenkins.
