Former Captain of Punjab Ranji Team off spinner Umesh Kumar of Patiala died of a heart attack at Patiala this evening. Umesh Kumar was presently a member of Punjab State Senior Selection Committee and was working with State Bank of Patiala at Patiala. He had lost his elder son aged 28, four days back. Umesh Kumar was a gentleman cricketer of the earlier era and represented Punjab in 64 first class matches from 1969-1985 during which he scored 820 runs and at an average of 17.44 and captured 193 wickets with his off spin bowling at an average of 20.47. After retirement from 1st class cricket he took on the responsibilities of umpiring and became a BCCI Panel Umpire and later also was appointed as Match Referee for the various first class domestic matches. According to Mr. Sushil Kapoor, Spokes-Person of PCA the President Mr. I.S. Bindra and other Office Bearers of the Punjab Cricket Association condoled the death of a great cricketer, who had served the state admirably for a very long time both first as a player and then as an official. The PCA fraternity sends its heartfelt sympathies to the breaved family.
