Having played 18 times for England under-19’s at test and one day level (including the 1999 World Cup in Sri Lanka) the left handed batsman probably expected to be settled in his county career quicker than he was. His original opportunity in first class cricket occurred in 2001 for Surrey and his 31 average over 6 matches might have been good enough for a longer run in many counties the season after. However 2002 saw Surrey win the championship and, despite 153 against Cambridge University early on, Carberry was marooned for most of the season in the reserves.

 

He moved to Kent in 2003 and settled down well as an opener, averaging over 35 in his first season and 42 in his second, where he dropped down the order. Despite this 2005 saw his only first class game come against Bangladesh, and with a lack of runs in one day competitions (save an average of 80 in the twenty20 cup) again he was stuck in the second eleven.

 

Another south coast move followed to Hampshire in 2006. He hit 938 runs in championship matches, usually opening, and improved his one day record with a
