DateLine: 5th February 2007

Ten cricket fans were evicted from the MCG on Sunday for trying to start the Mexican wave during Australia's one-day game against New Zealand. A further 130 people were evicted from the ground for offences including drunkenness during the match, Victoria Police spokesman Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said. Scores of plain-clothes police and more than 200 MCG security staff mingled with cricket fans inside the MCG, keeping an eye out for mischief-makers, senior police said. A network of static security cameras along with police and security staff using hand-held video cameras were deployed to watch for trouble-makers. Cricket Australia last week announced a complete ban on Mexican waves at all remaining one-day international matches this season. Concern over spectator safety and the throwing of missiles and litter onto the field prompted authorities to adopt the ban. The ban follows a review of security to prevent a repeat of loutish behaviour that marred a match in Melbourne last month. Offenders have been warned they will be thrown out of the ground while fans caught throwing objects face a $210 on-the-spot fine.
