Media Release - 20 November 2006

The official verdict of the Match Referee Mr Khalid Niazi on the ball-tampering incident in the ABN AMRO Patron's Trophy 2006-2007 match being played between Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and Customs from 17-20 November, 2006 at National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex, Karachi is as follows:

"On the second day of the match when ZTBL was bowling, (the) Umpires changed the ball after 28.1 overs and gave 5 penalty runs to the batting side (Customs) because in their opinion ZTBL team changed the condition of the ball but they failed to spot the real culprit. According to (the) Law (of the game), when no one is caught red-handed, the Captain is responsible, so a fine of Rs 5,000/- has been imposed on Rao Iftikhar Anjum on behalf of ZTBL Team. Mohammad Khalil was called in hearing just because he was bowling at that time but no evidence or proof was found against him so he has been cleared gracefully from this matter."
