Though the English side struggled in the morning session, the visitors breezed through in the second session as they picked up the remaining five wickets to win the first Test by 181 runs.

England's march towards victory was stalled by a staunch resistance by Junaid Siddique (106, 292b, 17x4) and Mushfiqur Rahim (95, 232b, 12x4) as the pair frustrated the English bowlers. Once the southpaw Siddique crossed his maiden Test century it seemed that some miracle was around the corner. But after lunch Bresnan and Swann combined to remove the final five wickets as England won the first match by 181 runs.

Swann became the first off-spinner from England to take a ten wicket haul in the match after Jim Laker in 1956
