Match report day 2: Sussex v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Sussex v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

The second days play was absorbing cricket for the purist. Runs were accumulated slowly courtesy of gritty patient batting. Lancashire's fortunes fluctuated throughout. Initially taking control at 99 for 0, and then appearing to be in big trouble at 192 for 5. By the close of play, the match result remained in the balance. The day started badly off the field - the team coach was broken in to overnight, with a few items being stolen and a small amount of damage sustained. By the close Lancashire trailed by just 34 runs. With the pitch taking spin already the visitors will have to work hard to avoid defeat in what will effectively be a one innings encounter between Lancashire and the Sussex Shark!

Bowling Performance of the Day

Mushtaq Ahmed bowled an incredible 42 overs during the second days play. Without Mushtaq Sussex's attack was very very ordinary. It was clear to see why Sussex find themselves toward the top of the table. Without Mushtaq, Sussex would find themselves fighting for division one survival. Mushtaq's final figures for the day were 43 overs (He bowled one over the previous day) 4 wickets for 111 runs. As usual, Mushtaq persistently kept on over appealing. The umpires really should have intervened. At least they did not bow to his intimidation

Batting Performance of the Day

Stuart Law scored a superb 96. He received 162 balls and scored 11 boundaries. He came to the crease at 1pm (102 for 2) and departed at 5.15pm (289 for 6). He was denied a century by an atrocious piece of umpiring by Barry Dudleston in the 94th over. The ball was caught by Richard Montgomerie directly off of Law's leg, and not his bat. Law's innings was completely different to any previous high scores during the season. He was exceptionally patient as he battled head to head with Mushtaq Ahmed. He was frequently beaten by the flight and spin of Mushtaq but maintained his discipline and concentration. He reached his 50 from 70 balls (8 x 4).

Fielding Performance of the Day

Nothing special to report. Goodwin held two catches which were both struck at him (Loye and Chapple). Montgomerie caught Chilton as the opener attempted to sweep Mark Davis, and Law in close on the leg side (See comments below/above regarding Law's wicket) Matt Prior held a sharp bat/pad chance in close on the off side to dismiss Iain Sutcliffe for 43

Highlights of the Day

  • The way Lancashire applied themselves with the bat - Stuart Law's 96, Mark Chilton's 65 and Glen Chapple's 54.
  • Securing 4 batting points and reducing the lead to just 34 runs by the close
  • The manner in which Lancashire handled Mushtaq Ahmed - other than Chris Schofield, everyone watched him carefully and only hit the bad ball

Lowlights of the Day

  • Failing to post a hundred partnership by one run
  • Losing two quick wickets before the lunch interval to bring the game back onto an even keel
  • Hooper's ugly stroke which lead to his dismissal - not necessary at the time. He launched himself at Mushtaq but the ball flew high into the air. Mushtaq moved a few yards to his right to take the catch. He held onto the second attempt after failing to hold the ball initially
  • Just missing out on the hundred partnership between Law and Chapple thanks to umpire Dudleston's shocking decision
  • Chris Schofield's dreadful shot which resulted in his demise - bowled leg stump attempting a reckless sweep shot very early in his innings

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Stuart Law was not out. The ball clearly missed the bat as it flew off Law's pad into Montgomerie's hands. The close fielders strangled their appeal as they too realized that the ball had not touched the bat. Quite incredibly, umpire Dudleston raised his finger. Everyone was astonished. Law wandered back slowly to the pavilion having been robbed of a simply brilliant century
