Ian was introduced to the game by his father, a former player and now a coach and administrator. In addition to his cricket, Ian also plays golf and football, in addition to having represented Glasgow Schools at rugby. As a cricketer, he has represented his district at all age levels, and first played for the national U13 side at the age of 11. He has now repeated his district feat by appearing for Scotland at all age groups up to the U19. In 2002 Ian played in the winning U19 European championship side and in the same side, which qualified for this World Cup as runners up, in the 2003 European championships. Also in 2003 he enjoyed success with the bat in a trial with the MCC Young Cricketers and is a club-mate of Moneeb Iqbal. Thanks to his fielding, he regards Jonty Rhodes (South Africa) as his favourite player.
