WOOD, George Henry.
Amateur.
Born at Liverpool, Lancashire, 21st May 1846.
Educated at Bingley, Yorkshire, he was a great lover of the game of cricket. A member of the MCC, of which he was on the Committee 1876-79, he played for them in two first-class matches 1880-81. He had a private income and there is no trace of him ever having to work. He was for a time honorary secretary of the Eastbourne C.C.
It is thought that he eventually returned to Liverpool, but no trace of his death has been found.
In the 1881 Census we find him living at The Grange, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire unmarried aged 34 having an income derived from dividends, with his brother Charles a 37 year old solicitor. He has two visitors, Alfred Chater a 28 year old Lieutenant in the 3rd Surrey Militia and Henry St John Oliver a 17 year old scholar. There are three domestic servants.
In the 1901 Census there is a George Wood, single, aged 53 and living on own means, boarding at 34 Ashbourne Road, Toxteth, Liverpool, with John Arthur and Mary C.C. Watkins, who have three sons and two daughters.
