Brief profile of Don Ward
by Dr.A.K.Hignell

Player:DJ Ward

Don Ward was a talented right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler, who was also a fine fielder either close to the wicket or in the outfield. He made 135 appearances in first-class cricket for Glamorgan between 1954 and 1962, and won his county cap in 1961

Ward was brought up in London, and played for the England Schools Cricket Association in 1950, before spending some time on the Lord`s groundstaff, where he was recommended to the Welsh county.

The diminutive Ward was a very brave and attractive strokemaker, but in his nine years with Glamorgan he never scored a first-class hundred, with 86 against Somerset at the Arms Park in 1956 being his best effort with the bat.

He was also a good off-spinner, but with Jim McConnon and Don Shepherd in Glamorgan`s ranks, Ward faced plenty of competition. Even so, he claimed five wickets in an innings on five occasions, and recorded career-best figures of 7/60 against Lancashire at Blackpool in 1962.
