CARTER, Edmund Sardinson.
Amateur.
Born at Malton, Yorkshire, 3rd February 1845.
Died at Scarborough, Yorkshire, 23rd May 1923.
The son of the Rev.W.Carter, rector of Slingsby, Yorkshire. He was educated at Durham School, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1861-64, being captain in the last two years. He went up to Worcester College, Oxford, where he played for the University eleven 1865-68, gaining his blue in 1866 and 1867. He also rowed in the University eight gaining his blue in 1867 and 1868. He went on holiday, to Australia to recover from pleurisy, in the winter of 1868/9 and played one match for Victoria. Between 1876 and 1881 he played in fourteen matches for Yorkshire. His last first-class match was for I Zingari in 1882.
He was curate of Christchurch, Ealing, 1871-75, and of St Martin-cum-Gregory, York, 1876-77, being rector there 1877-82. Vicar of St Michael-le-Belfry, York, 1882-1908 and vicar-choral of York Minster 1875-1904, being Sub-Chanter York Minster 1904-08. He was a composer of hymns and Church music. In 1912 he was living at Thwing Rectory, Hunmanby, York.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 40 Bishophill, York, recorded as Edward Sardinson CARTER, aged 36, vicar of York Minster and rector of St Martin-cum-Gregory, York. His wife, Rose S., aged 40, was born at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The oldest son, Edmond S., aged 10, was born at Slingsby, York. Two daughters, Catherine E., aged 9, and Rose F., aged 6, and a son William M., aged 8, were born at Ealing, Middlesex. Two sons, Charles J.W., aged 5, and Earnest F., aged 2, and two daughters Mary, aged 4, and Lucy E.C., aged 2 months, were born at Clifton, York. There are two nieces, Mabel May Fox, aged 14 and Sybil Alice Fox, aged 9, born at Uttoxeter. There were four domestic servants.
