BUCHANAN, David.
Amateur.
Born at Edinburgh, Scotland, 16th January 1830.
Died at Northfield House, Rugby, Warwickshire, 30th May 1900.
Educated at Rugby School, he went up to Clare College, Cambridge. He played cricket for the University in 1850, when he got his blue, and 1851. Playing mainly for the Gentlemen of England and the Free Foresters, most of his best performances were achieved when he was aged 39 and over. In all he played in 62 first-class matches, his last being in 1881. He played for Lincolnshire in 1872 and 1873, but most of his county cricket was for Warwickshire, before they achieved first-class status, in the years 1862-85. He captained that county for some years, was Chairman 1882-85 and Treasurer 1885-91.
The 1881 Census finds him resident at 1 Newbold Road, Rugby, aged 51, and described as M.A. Cantab. Income from dividends, interest, etc. His wife, Anna W., aged 45, was born in Bath. Also resident are two sons, John P., aged 16, and George P., aged 4, and six daughters, Annie L. (25), Helen R. (23), Gertrude R. (15), Margaret H. (11), Jesse L. (8), and Florence B. (6). There is a governess, aged 34 and unmarried, and four domestic servants, who have two visitors.
