• This was the 2037th ODI in cricket history.
• Morne van Wyk was making his international debut for South Africa. He became 75th player to represent South Africa in ODIs.
• South Africa’s total (107) is their lowest against England. The previous lowest was 129 at East London on 19-01-1996. This is also their fourth lowest total against all countries.
• This is also the lowest total by any side on this ground. The previous lowest was Pakistan’s 132 against Australia at Lord’s in 1999 World Cup final.
• Darren Gough’s figures (7-2-9-2) are the most economical for any bowler in a seven-over spell in the grand final of a tournament. The previous record was of conceding 12 runs shared by two Indians – Mohinder Amarnath in 1983 World Cup final and Javagal Srinath in 1996-97 Standard Bank International ODI Series (which was eventually abandoned and replayed on the next day).
• Chris Read became only the second English wicket-keeper to effect five dismissals in an innings. Only Alec Stewart with six catches against Zimbabwe at Manchester on 13-07-2000 had the better haul.
• England won the match with 178 balls to spare. This is South Africa’s second largest defeat in ODIs. They were beaten by Australia at Sydney on 22-01-2002 with 188 balls still to be bowled in Australia’s innings.
• The victory is also the second largest by any side in the grand final of a tournament. England in fact missed the golden opportunity to better the existing world record. Australia had beaten Pakistan with 179 balls to spare in 1999 World Cup final.
• This is England’s sixth tournament win (consisting of at least three teams). Their other title wins are : Benson & Hedges Challenge in 1986-87, Benson & Hedges World Series in 1986-87, Sharjah Cup in 1986-87,Singer-Akai Champions Trophy in 1997-98 and NatWest Triangular Series in 2000.
• Darren Gough was winning his fourth Man of the match award.
• Andrew Flintoff with 210 runs and 10 wickets in the series became only the second English allrounder to score 200-plus runs and take 10 wickets in a series or tournament. The only other is Ian Botham who made 205 runs and took 17 wickets in Benson and Hedges World Series in 1982-83.
