Statistical highlights of Australia v India 15th February 2003

Scorecard:Australia v India

  • India, having scored 40 runs in first seven overs, could manage to score only 10 runs in next 10 overs losing three wickets in between !!
  • Skipper Sourav Ganguly has now aggragated a paltry 75 runs in nine innings since the start of the ODI series against New Zealand in December 2002 at an average of 8.33 runs per innings and the strike rate of 39.28 runs per 100 balls !!
  • Rahul Dravid, with one run off 23 balls (Scoring rate 4.35) achieved the worst scoring rate by an Indian in World Cup making a single run. Ajya Jadeja was the previous ‘record’ holder as he made one off 17 balls (Scoring rate 5.88) against Ausrtralia at Mumbai in 1996.
  • Dravid also equalled the worst scoring rate by an Indian in all ODIs making a single run. Sachin Tendulkar had also made 1 off 23 balls against New Zealand at Gwalior in 1999.
  • Mohammad Kaif has now scored only 164 runs in last 20 matches and 16 innings at an average of 11.71 since his match saving knock of 111 not out against Zimababwe at Colombo in September 2002
  • The 40 run partnership between Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh equals India's best for the eighth wicket against Australia. Manoj Prabhakar and Chetan Sharma had added unbeaten 40 at Bangalore in 1989.
  • Jason Gillespie's figures of 10-2-13-3 (RpO 1.30) was the second most economical bowling performance by an Australian bowler (bowling his full quota of overs) against India. The best still remains with Glenn McGrath who had figures of 10-4-8-4 (RpO 0.80) at Sydney in 2000.
  • Gillespie’s figures were also the third most economical performance by an Australian bowler (bowling his full quota of overs) in the World Cup. Shane Warne has the best figures (10-4-11-3; RpO 1.10) against West Indies at Manchester in 1999 followed by Gary Gilmour (12-6-14-6; RpO 1.17) against England at Leeds in 1975.
  • Incidentally Gillespie's figures equals the most economical bowling performance on South African soil by any bowler (bowling his full quota of overs) . Teammate Glenn McGrath had also conceded 13 runs in his 10 overs whilst taking two wickets against the home team at Cape Town in 2000.
  • India's total of 125 was their lowest in a World Cup match. The previous lowest was the 132-3 they made in 60 overs against England at Lord's on 7-6-1975.India's lowest when the team has been dismissed was the 158 (in 37.5 overs) also against Australia at Nottingham in 1983.
  • Matthew Hayden became the 104th batsman in ODIs and 15th Australian to complete 2000 runs with a straight –driven six off Srinath. Hayden was appearing in his 56th match and 53rd innings.
  • The margin of defeat by 9 wickets equals India's worst in a Wolrd Cup match. West Indies had beaten India by the same margin at Birmingham in 1979.
  • This was India's sixth defeat against the Australians in 8 World Cup matches and their fourth World Cup loss in a row against Australia since 1992. India has now lost as many as 11 matches out of the last 14 against Australia.
