A dominant, classical right hand batsman, whose records would have seemed even more remarkable if he had not played at the same time as Bradman. A superb cover driver, but scored all round the wicket. Probably the finest slip fielder to have played the game (along with Bob Simpson), and an excellent right arm medium fast bowler. Captained England with a good record.
