Surrey 2nd XI won this match by an innings and 233 runs early in the afternoon on the second day. They thus completed the 'double' over Wiltshire, having also won when the teams met at Swindon in June. Only two hours of play were needed on the second day and the Wiltshire second innings lasted 90 minutes. For the winners, debutant N Miller scored 188, an innings which took 270 minutes and included 2 fives, 22 fours, 6 threes and 18 twos. Surrey delayed their declaration on the second day to give him the opportunity to reach his double century, but he was run out after adding only 2 runs to his overnight score. It was a new record score for the Championship, exceeding the 176 scored by H K Foster for Worcestershire against Hertfordshire at Watford in 1896. It was to be overtaken in August by J F Marsh, who scored 200 not out for Oxfordshire v Buckinghamshire at Aylesbury. W J Baker's 79 included 1 five and 10 fours, and Thompson's 73 contained 2 fives and 7 fours.
In the Surrey innings, N Miller and Thompson added 136 runs for the fourth wicket, which was the second highest partnership for this wicket during the season, and N Miller and W J Baker put on 158 runs for the fifth wicket, which was a new record partnership for that wicket. The latter exceeded the record of 149 jointly held by W H Kingston and H E Kingston for Northamptonshire against Staffordshire at Northampton, and by R G E Mortimer and G Elsey for Northumberland against Cambridgeshire at Cambridge, both in 1897. Dolbey took 12 wickets in the match for 71 runs, including 7 for 33 in the Wiltshire second innings. The margin of victory was a new record for the Championship, exceeding the innings and 187 runs win by Berkshire against Oxfordshire at Reading in 1898.
