In this virtual final Queensland gained the first advantage by winning the toss and batting first. A good opening was made and during the day the total passed 250 with only two wickets down and a total of around four hundred seemed a distinct possibility. At 283 Geoff Paulsen left, he and Murree having added 125, the second century partnership of the innings. From that point the innings folded the lower order not being able to hold out for the full one hundred overs. The bowling had been led by Doug Ellis and well backed by skipper Glen Dehring who in previous Championships had bowled little but now followed on from a five wicket haul in the previous round with another four. By stumps Western Australia had batted seven overs for 12 runs and most importantly without losing a wicket.
The first wicket came a little over half an hour into the second day and was quickly followed by that of Dale Burns, always a good man to have back in the pavilion. In came Tony Warren who had yet to make one of his customary big scores in this series. Runs came steadily and there were a few fielding blunders by the Queenslanders. Skipper Dehring played another fine innings and with the patient Warren added 127 for the fourth wicket. The game was slipping away from Queensland. Head did not last and there was a faint hope that the bowlers could quickly dispose of the lower order. But it was not to be as Tonkin batted firmly and saw Warren to his century and then sent the first ball of Toohey's thirty-seventh over to the fence for a Western Australian victory.
Though he managed only two wickets for the innings Toohey went to the top of the wicket takers for the series.
