Notes
--> The match was scheduled for three days but completed in two.
--> H Trumble (1) passed 1000 runs in first-class matches for the season when he reached 4
--> VT Trumper (1) passed 2500 runs in first-class matches when he reached 33
--> CM Wells reached 200 wickets in first-class matches when taking his 1st wicket in the Australians first innings
--> CE McLeod achieved his best innings bowling analysis in first-class matches in the Middlesex first innings (previous best was 7-87)

On the first day the game was marred when the crowd rebelled against the Australian batsmen for slow scoring. The crowd of 10,000 which had grown restless in the morning, finally boiled over in the afternoon, particularly at the batting of Darling. Ironic cheering when a run was scored, was followed at one point by the crowd whistling 'Dead March in Saul'. Other musical compositions followed including 'Poor Old Joe' and 'We won't go home till morning', interspersed with remarks of a personal nature. Darling attributed his slowness to a painfully bruised heel. Darling's innings lasted for 270 minutes and he hit 18 fours. Iredale batted for 195 minutes and included 17 fours.
