Ireland won the toss and will bat
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the twenty-first match in the 2007 Cricket World Cup from a shell-shocked Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica where Group A comes to a close with West Indies and Ireland, the top two sides in the group, going head-to-head to see who takes the points through to the Super Eights.
Sadly, though, the island of Jamaica is in shock at the news that Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was murdered at the team hotel in Kingston and it has rocked the cricketing world. But the tournament will continue, following assurances from ICC chief Malcolm Speed, despite some calls for it to be abandoned after this most horrific news.
Aside from the terrible developments, West Indies and the surprise-package Ireland will be targetting a win to go into the next stage with the all-important extra points and both sides are currently unbeaten - Ireland having beaten Pakistan and tied with Zimbabwe while the West Indies have swept both aside in their two games. Who knows that is going to happen here today. But one thing is for sure - there will be plenty of people with one eye on the cricket and one on the Woolmer investigation just down the road from Sabina Park.
Naturally, on home soil, the West Indies will be hot favourites to win this game but Ireland have proved their worth in the tournament to date and cannot be underestimated.
The twenty-first game of the tournament, at Sabina Park, is the 25th match to be staged here since 1984.The first game, in April of that year, saw West Indies trounce Australia by 9 wickets and they went on to win 11 for the first 12 games they played here. But their opening day win over Pakistan was just their second since 2001. All of Group A's games have been played here.
This will be the first time that the West Indies have played Ireland in one-day international cricket. But it is not the first time they have played each other though and the match in 1969 at Sion Millsis still celebrated long and hard on the Emerald Isle. The West Indies, as legend has it, were plied with Guinness the night before - and were bowled out for just 25 (having recovered from 12-9). Every time the West Indies tour England, they go over for a game and a party!
Richie Richardson is the leading run-scorer on this ground with 418 in 8 games (average 69.66) while Curtly Ambrose holds the record for the most wickets taken with 12 from 7 games (average 17.41).
Billy Bowden of New Zealand and Englishman Ian Gould are the umpires with Brian Jerling from South Africa and Simon Taufel as third and fourth. Roshan Mahanama is the match referee.
