Rishton had brought J Cupitt of Keighley to act as a substitute professional for Marshall who had been away assisting his county and could not be expected to be in prime form after an all-night railway ride. Enfield objected to this arrangement and Rishton decided not to use the Derbyshire left-arm medium pace bowler.
Hall from Werneth deputised for Tom Lancaster, the Enfield professional, who was "still on the sick list".
