Jim Troughton is still waiting for his fame to overtake that of his grandfather, Patrick, who played Dr Who in the 1960’s. His chance came in 2003, with his ODI debut for England, although six matches brought just 36 runs at an average of 9, although he did at least demonstrate that his fielding was of a very high standard. Since then his batting has gone backwards somewhat, with just a century apiece in 2004 and 2005. Troughton’s development had initially been overshadowed by Warwickshire team-mate Ian Bell, although Bell’s poor seasons in 2002 and 2003 allowed Troughton to wear the three lions first. However, the tables have now been turned again, as opposing batsmen have realised that giving him little which is either pitched up, or outside off-stump, is an excellent way to stop him from scoring. His left-arm spin is occasionally productive, and if further worked on could increase his chances of a return to international colours.
