When Wayne Dessaur scored a century on his First-class Derbyshire debut in 1995, few expected him to be shown the door four months later. After being released by Nottinghamshire in 1994, some excellent knocks for Derbyshires Second XI in early season conditions showed that he could play, and although his debut and hundred were made against the undemanding attack of Oxford University, the pitch was seaming and Dessaur showed a willingness to grind out his innings. Such patience led to him becoming only the fourth man in Derbyshire history to record 3 figures on debut. Although such a start was inevitably unsustainable, a run in the side saw him average a touch under 30 in the Championship, which was a tolerable return. However, Dessaur was a victim of Derbyshires desire to clear the decks in anticipation of the arrival of Dean Jones, although he could genuinely consider himself to have been unfortunate not to have got another year to establish himself.
