Match report day 2: Lancs v Glos in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Gloucestershire

Summary for day 2

At 4.30pm, Andrew Crook pulled a short ball from Jon Lewis straight down the throat of Ian Fisher on the deep mid wicket boundary in front of the pavilion. The catch signalled an end to Lancashire's reign in division one and finally put everyone out of their misery. After a delayed start, the hosts fought tenaciously either side of the lunch interval, moving to 87 before the impending disaster struck. Four wickets fell for 23 runs inside 9 overs courtesy of a rash of poor strokes. Hooper, Chapple and Crook tried their best to put off the loss of the sixth wicket, but eventually buckled under the weight of the responsibility. Cork blasted 77 runs from 70 balls when the pressure was off, as Lancashire equalled Gloucestershire's first innings score of 311 before being dismissed just before the close of play. Anyone who thinks Lancashire will simply bounce back in 2005, might be in for a shock. I predict further disappointment next season as Lancashire's old aged squad continues it's slide into oblivion.
