Match report: Derbys v Lancs in NCL 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Derbyshire v Lancashire

Summary

Lancashire completed their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions, albeit a close finale in near perfect conditions. Batting first after winning the toss (yet again!) - the visitors posted a useful 251 for 6 from 45 overs. At one stage, the total was on course to supersede 270. 36 runs from the final 5 overs, including 17 from the 45th over, enabled Lancashire to set Derbyshire in excess of 5.5 per over from the outset. The home side collapsed to 61 for 5 after 17 overs and appeared to be out of the match. However, a spirited partnership of 114 from 19 overs from Cork and Sutton set the nerves jingling and palms sweating!!

Bowling Performance of the Day

Both the senior pace bowlers performed exceptionally well on a slow wicket. Glen Chapple only conceded 6 runs in his opening 5 over spell (2 wickets). Kyle Hogg removed the dangerous Kaif, although the slog shot which Kaif played would not have been out of place in the 20/20 cup. Peter Martin used all of his experience to bowl a tremendous final over (only conceding 3 singles). Overall the honour goes to Chapple for his final figures of 4 for 37.

Batting Performance of the Day

Another super all round batting performance from Lancashire's top 4. Sutcliffe 43 runs from 56 balls - Law 46 runs from 37 balls - and Hooper 37 runs from 37 balls. However, Loye's 63 runs from 91 balls was extremely gritty - especially as he struggled with his timing during the first 10 overs. His opening partnership of 95 with Iain Sutcliffe set the foundation for a big total and ultimately a fine victory.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Once again, Lancashire's ground fielding was very good (Exception listed below) - the team held a number of outstanding catches in the outfield (Loye in particular). However, Warren Hegg's diving catch to dismiss Di Venuto was breathtaking and vital. The ball was travelling exceptionally fast through the first slip region.

Highlights of the Day

  • Stuart Law's swashbuckling 46 runs from 37 balls
  • Carl Hooper's huge six which hit the main scoreboard
  • Mal Loye's catch/celebration upon removing Dumelow

Lowlights of the Day

  • Watching Derbyshire fight their way back in the game from 61 for 5.
  • Mark Chilton suffered a bad day at the office - he conceded 23 runs from 2 overs and scored nought from 5 balls before being pinned back in the crease.
  • Sajid Mahmood was caught on his heels several times while fielding at long-on/off. Lancashire conceded valuable runs in this area.
  • Lancashire's running between the wickets was poor at times. A better fielding side would have captured at least 2 run-outs.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Nothing significant to report - Mark Chilton's diving stop on the boundary rope was not clean - Showing true sporting spirit, Alec Swann signalled 4 to the umpire.

Man of the Match

Match conditions generally favoured the batsmen. Consequently, Glen Chapple's bowling performance clinched the award.
