Hutton had a finger broken from an Edrich delivery.
PA Gibb needed stitches after being hit on the head by a short-pitched ball from Smith. W Barber kept wicket on the first day and Robins allowed Wood to replace Gibb as wicket-keeper, although he was not in the original eleven. C Turner and a Middlesex player acted as the other substitute fielders.
M Leyland fractured his left thumb and was forced to retire after another blow to his hand.
