Carmarthenshire - a historical introductionThe earliest records of cricket in South Wales concern matches in the 1780s in Carmarthenshire, including a contest organised by John Phillips of Cwmgwili on Court Henry Down in August 1783.During the 19th century various gentlemen's teams called themselves Carmarthenshire, and in 1854 one such side was assembled to play a team representing Glamorgan. From the 1860s a more representative side was assembled by Charles Bishop of Dolgarreg and his team played regular fixtures against neighbouring county sides, including Glamorgan. In 1889 the Carmarthenshire club asked C.P.Lewis (pictured below), who had won a Blue at Oxford, besides winning Welsh rugby caps, to look into the possibilities of Carmarthenshire joining the Minor County Championship. Lewis was one of the leading players in the region, and he had a mass of contacts, but he felt overall, that it would not at the time be financially viable, and suggested that the ambitious committee wait a few years.

They eventually recorded their inaugural win in 1910, defeating Dorset home and away, as well as beating Cornwall. But further defeats followed in 1911, and with their finances now severely drained and unable to hire decent professionals, they withdrew from the Minor County Championship in 1912.
