Northumberland won this return match by an innings and 86 runs before lunch on the second day, after Cheshire followed on 120 runs behind. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in June had also been won by Northumberland. Rain on the first day delayed the start until 2.00 pm. For the winners, Elsey took 12 wickets in the match for 39 runs, including 8 for 25 in the first innings. Milne took the remaining 8 wickets in the match for 49 runs. Gillespie top-scored with 39. For the losers, Rigby played the highest innings with 24. The match aggregate of 300 runs was the second lowest for a completed match during the season. This was the first use of this ground for a Championship match.
