This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
Lancashire 2nd XI won this match by 8 runs shortly before 5 pm on the second day. It was the inaugural match for Lincolnshire in the Championship, though the previous County Club had played matches in 1895 which counted towards the table for their opponents. Requiring 132 runs to win in their second innings in around 4 hours, Lincolnshire fell just 9 runs short. When they had reached 120 for the loss of 6 wickets, it had seemed probable that the home side would win, but the last four wickets added only 3 runs. For the winners, Hartley top-scored with 31 which included 3 fours. In the Lincolnshire second innings, Broughton's 33 contained 3 fours. [An alternative version of this score, found only in the Lancashire Recopied Scorebook and not in any of the other sources listed , including the Manchester Guardian, gives in the Lancashire second innings W K Tyldesley scoring 13 not 12, extras 15 not 16, and Broughton conceding 12 runs not 11.]
[Missing: Umpires; in Lancashire second innings extras' details one short.]
