--> D Simpson retired hurt in the Taranaki first innings having scored 40 (team had lost 5 wickets) - he returned when the score was 325/9

D Simpson had to retire hurt during the first session on the second day after being struck on the hand and when he resumed his innings at the fall of the ninth wicket with his left hand in plaster he managed to fend off 4 deliveries batting one-handed
Taranaki declared their second innings closed at 3.10pm on the third day leaving Canterbury Country the impossible task of scoring 373 in little more than 3 hours for the outright win so the captains agreed to end the game at that time
