This is the first 'great' match involving WCC, forerunner of MCC. WCC had six given men; in other words, it consisted of five amateurs from WCC and six professionals. The Kent side likewise has five amateurs, presumably by arrangement, with five Kent professionals and Francis as a given man. The teams are listed with the amateurs first, not in batting order.
CJ gives Day 2 close: Kent (2) 37-5 (Hussey 0*) with the men out Amherst 8, Bullen 16, Francis 6, Aylward 4, Ring 3 but this is irreconcilable with the LC version as above, and as CJ is not local to Islington its version is not accepted.
