The mercurial all-rounder is a world known entity and after Chris Cairns retired, is feared by all oppositions as the one Kiwi player who can change the game in a flash. He is a tall and well built player who can bowl long spells and hit the ball quite hard. But his huge frame doesn’t deter him from fielding and he is known to be one of the better fielders in the New Zealand team. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2001 and then followed it up with a Test debut against the touring Indians in 2002. In 27 Tests, he has made 1428 runs at 36.61 and taken 57 wickets at 30.12. Till date, he has played 115 ODIs and has scored 1764 runs with a highest maiden score of 101 not out while also taking 119 wickets. He has been on top of his game for the last couple of seasons when he impressed in the CB series in Australia in 2006-07. But regular injuries have been troubling him throughout his career and it could have been far more illustrious had he stayed fit and played more matches. He is quite a character off the field and when he injured his finger just before the 2007 World Cup, he even joked around that he would rather cut it off than miss the tournament. He didn’t miss the tournament though, getting fit in time, and played a crucial role in helping New Zealand reach the semi-finals. He has been snapped up by the Chennai SuperKings to play in the IPL.
