Elton Chigumbura celebrates the wicket of Kamran Akmal

Another of those young cricketers who was thrust into the national side following the withdrawal of the rebel players Elton Chigumbara made his first class debut when only 15. An aggressive middle order batsman and a medium pace seam bowler who gives adequate back up to the main attack Chigumbara has done reasonably well in the limited opportunities at the Test level though he is a regular in the one-day squad. His best Test has been against Bangladesh at Chittagong in January 2005 when he scored 71 and had innings figures of five for 54. A hard hitter of the ball he has a strike rate of almost 78 in ODIs and given the fact that Zimbabwe generally play against much stronger sides his average of 22 is quite impressive. His best score of 77 (off 90 balls with nine fours and two sixes) was against the might of Australia at Harare in 2004. He came good in the Champions Trophy in England in 2004 hitting an unbeaten 42 (top score) against England and following it up with a fine double (top score of 57 and most successful bowler with three for 36) against Sri Lanka. A product of the Zimbabwe Cricket development programme he represented Zimbabwe in twoUnder-19 World Cup tournaments. He took four wickets in Zimbabwe’s stunning victory over Australia in the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. He made his ODI and Test debuts within a fortnight against Sri Lanka at home in 2004.
