He is basically of Indian origin but was born & brought up in Wellington. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2005 and since then has been identified as a second spin option as the other spinner in the team, Daniel Vettori, is a left hander. Thus, even by the admission of the selectors, he brings a great variety to the Kiwi attack and has been identified as a key bowler to bowl in the death. This also reflects in his statistics as he has played more ODI cricket than Test cricket. In the 29 ODIs played, he has taken 36 wickets at 33.52, which is a decent average for some one who bowls mostly in the end overs. He had made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2005 and since he was bowling well in tandem with Vettori, he was finally given a Test cap in 2006 against South Africa. But in a team dominated by fast bowlers, he has been able to get only 3 games so far and has taken 11 wickets. His good performance in the 2006-07 CB series was well rewarded as he won a place on the New Zealand squad to the 2007 World Cup, as the selectors felt that his slow bowling could be very effective in the Caribbean. He played six matches in that particular tournament.
