Player:AN Cook

DateLine: 3rd June 2008

In school cricket, he broke all sorts of records and was thrust into the county circuit early. Coached by the great Graham Gooch, he hit his maiden First Class century in 2004, before captaining England in the 2004 under-19 World Cup, where he also hit two centuries.

In the midst of an injury crisis, he made his Test debut against India in 2006 and hasn’t looked back ever since. In 27 Tests, he has scored 2130 runs at a great average of 43.46, with 7 centuries and 9 half centuries. This means that as an opener, not only is he compact but also consistent, given his penchant for converting fifties into hundreds. Back to back hundreds against Pakistan in 2006 only cemented his place in the side.

He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2006 but was given the role of opening the innings only a bit later. Since then, he has played 21 ODIs scoring 667 runs at 31.76 per innings.
