Robin Peterson Profile

Player:RJ Peterson

DateLine: 20th February 2007

South Africa has depended overmuch on their pace attack for breakthroughs and it is only rarely that a spin bowler has been among the wickets. It is to the credit of Robin Peterson that in the absence of Nicky Boje he has been able to hold a regular place in the ODI squad even though his Test place is not yet secure thanks chiefly to the harsh treatment meted out to him by Brian Lara in the first Test at Johannesburg in December 2003. The West Indian superstar hit Peterson for 28 runs in an over - the most runs by one batsman in an over in a Test. It speaks well of Peterson’s temperament that he has recovered after such an unenviable experience. The left arm finger spinner from Eastern Province bowls in orthodox fashion and is able to extract appreciable turn from any pitch that is even slightly responsive. He had an impressive Test debut against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2003 taking five wickets and scoring 61 at No 8 but over the last couple of years has figured mostly for the ODI squad. With four first class hundreds Peterson is no mug with the bat and he is also a fine versatile fielder.
