Former England captain Graham Gooch on Sunday criticised the injured Michael Vaughan, saying the team's current leader needed to score more runs to be valuable in one-dayers. "If someone scores a hundred in the one-dayers, you should have a 250-run total which is the basis of a good score," Gooch told The Sunday Mail. "They don't have a set plan, they don't have enough people to set the game up. Michael Vaughan is a very good cricketer, but in one-day cricket he has never scored a hundred" in 76 matches, the former captain added. "He has a future as a one-day player, but he has to start scoring heavily." Vaughan, who tore his left hamstring in England's drought-breaking win over New Zealand last Sunday, will miss his team's next two triangular one-day series matches - against New Zealand on Tuesday and Australia on Friday. The injury occurred in just Vaughan's second one-day international after 12 months on the sidelines due to surgery on his right knee. Team officials said in a statement that he could return for the match against New Zealand on January 30 in Perth. Vaughan averages 28 in one-day internationals, with a strike rate of 68, and a top score of 90. In his absence, veteran county cricketer Mal Loye opened against Australia on Friday and made an entertaining 36. Vaughan's injury also saw all-rounder Andrew Flintoff reappointed captain, but in another setback for the English it was reported over the weekend that he was only offered the position as it was believed he would decline. According to the report, opener Andrew Strauss was actually the preferred option of the English selectors.
