London: Sanath Jayasuriya was omitted from the Sri Lankan team for the second Test, which started at Edgbaston on Thursday, against Engalnd. Chairman of selectors Asantha De Mel created a storm in the island cricket set-up by clamouring for the veteran’s inclusion in the team for the second Test. Sri Lankan legend Aravinda de Silva too backed De Mel saying experience counts in Test cricket.

But captain Mahela Jayawardene was not very keen to bring back Jayasuriya, who had announced his Test retirement after a string of poor scores against Pakistan recently. Jayawardene argued recalling Jayasuriya would mean going against coach Tom Moody’s policy of blooding youth with an eye on the future. Moody too was not happy with De Mel’s role in giving thumbs up to the 36-year-old Jayasuriya’s resurrection in Tests.

Meanwhile, Lalith Malinga has been included in the 12-man team announced for the second Test. Out-of-form opener Jehan Mubarak makes for Michael Vandort.
