Andrews father introduced him to the game, although there was no family history of involvement in the game. He has also represented his school at soccer. As a wicket keeper, Andrew acknowledges he has a major role to play in the squad and welcomes the opportunity to play at a high level anticipated during the competition. He is very much looking forward to Bangladesh 2004. He was a member of the 2003 European championship-winning U17 side and also took part in the U19 World Cup qualifying tournament from which Scotland finished qualified as runners-up. He feels very privileged to be part of the squad for the World Cup and acknowledges the assistance provided by the coaches at his club and the national coaches for their assistance and encouragement. Squad members Kasim Farid and Ross Lyons are team-mates at his club, Clydesdale. He respects the contribution made to his teams performances by his favourite player, and fellow wicket-keeper, Adam Gilchrist (Australia).
