Born 16.2.1852 Over Darwen, Blackburn.
Died 22.5.1904 Darwen.

 

The second son of Nathaniel Walsh, a member of the firm of Hiltons, paper millers, of Darwen.

 

When Hiltons failed he became engaged in the cotton industry and the family was amongst the most important in North East Lancashire. George, who had three brothers and four sisters, was educated at Queen Wood College, Hampshire, where with his elder brother James and A.N.Hornby he was amongst the pupils who received prizes from Lord Palmerston. He later moved on to Rugby, which he entered in September 1866. He was not in the cricket eleven, but in 1867 was in the 4th eleven against Old Rugbeians. In 1869 he opened the innings for Old Rugbeians second eleven against the School second eleven, scoring 5.

 

His club cricket was played for Darwen, Manchester and Nantwich, where he was a steady batsman who fielded in the deep and at long-stop.

 

His first match for Lancashire was at Old Trafford, against Derbyshire, on 5th and 6th June 1874, when he opened the innings and scored 0 and 15. He next appears for Lancashire in August 1877, against Sussex at Old Trafford.

 

He played twice for Cheshire in 1876 and 1879, scoring 101 runs in his three innings, once not out, with a top score of 58.

 

On 8th and 9th August 1881 he played for the Gentlemen of Lancashire against Uppingham Rovers at Old Trafford, scoring 7 and 32.

 

He carried out the business of a cotton manufacturer and spinner at the Ellenshaw Mill, Darwen. He suffered only indifferent health and had retired some time before his death.

 

He was buried at Darwen Cemetery on Wednesday 25th May 1904, leaving a widow and two daughters.
