Born at Hastings, Sussex, 26th September 1849.
Died at Old Town, Hastings, Sussex, 31st January 1905.
He and his three brothers, Albert, Henry and Peter, were all keen cricketers in the Hastings area and Henry played in 195 matches for Sussex. James played in 73 first-class matches, 64 of them for Sussex. He is stated to have worked as an accountant in his native place.
In the 1881 Census he appears living at 3 Alpine Road, Hastings, Sussex, aged 31, a rate collector, with his wife Jane aged 30 and his daughter Elsie L. aged 2. Also present is a nephew, Edmund Dicks, aged 10. There is one domestic servant.
