Born at East Grinstead, Sussex, 6th August 1854.
Died at East Grinstead, Sussex, 25th June 1909.
A bootmaker by trade, an occupation followed by many members of the Payne family. He was engaged at Sevenoaks in 1874 and about 1880 at Tonbridge School. He played in 18 first-class matches 1880-86, 17 of them for Sussex. His brother Alfred also played for Sussex 1880-86 and his uncles Charles for Sussex 1857-70 and Kent 1863-70, Joseph Spencer for Sussex 1861 and Kent 1864 and Richard for Sussex 1853-66.
In the 1881 Census he is shown living at High Street, East Grinstead, Sussex, aged 26, a bootmaker, with his wife Emily, aged 25 and their young daughter, Emily J. aged three months.
