Scorecard:West Indies v Australia

  • This was 2021st match in ODI history.
  • Chris Gayle was playing his 50th consecutive match since 16-05-2001. He became sixth West Indian to appear in 50 or more consecutive matches after Richie Richardson (132), Viv Richards (74), Desmond Haynes (73), Brian Lara (67) and Jeff Dujon (50).
  • Darren Lehmann (107) scored his fourth hundred in 98th match – his second against West Indies.
  • Lehmann added 95 runs with Brad Hogg for the sixth wicket which just failed to beat Australia’s record sixth wicket stand against West Indies. Rod Marsh and Ross Edwards had added 99 runs in the 1975 World Cup at the Oval.
  • Brad Hogg’s innings of 53 is the highest by an Australian batsman at number seven against West Indies. Tom Moody had made unbeaten 50 at Bridgetown on 25-04-1999. This was also the fifth fifty by a number eight batsman for Australia.
  • Mervyn Dillon’s solitary wicket in the match has made him the most successful bowler in West Indies – Australia matches played in the Caribbeans. Dillon has now taken 19 wickets in 12 matches against Australia in the Caribbeans which takes him ahead of Craig McDermott who had 18 wickets to his credit.
  • The opening wicket stand of 116 was West Indies’ best against Australia in all matches obliterating the 99 run-partnership between Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes at Sydney on 16-01-1999 and between Sherwin Campbell and Ridley Jacobs at Bridgetown on 25-04-1999.
  • Chris Gayle (5-46) achieved his best bowling figures in a match. His previous best was 4 for 19 against Pakistan at Sharjah on 17-02-2002.
  • Gayle’s figures are the second best for West Indies against Australia in the Caribbeans after Tony Gray’s six for 50 at Port-of-Spain on 09-03-1991.
  • Gayle followed his best career bowing figures with an innings of 60. He thus became the second West Indian after Viv Richards and 11th player overall to perform the allround feat of scoring a fifty and capturing five wickets in the same match.
  • Wavell Hinds (103*) scored his second successive hundred and third of his career. He, on 85, completed 2000 runs of his ODI career. Hinds became 13th West Indian and 109th batsman overall to do so.
  • Brian Lara (75*, on 36) completed his 8000 runs in One-day internationals. He became second West Indies after Desmond Haynes and tenth overall to do so. By taking only 216 matches to perform this feat, Lara achieved the distinction of being the second fastest. Only India’s Saurav Ganguly (208) has taken lesser matches to complete his 8000 runs.
  • Lara ended the match in remarkable fashion hitting Darren Lehmann for three consecutive sixes off the first three balls of his second over.
  • West Indies’ total is the second highest in ODI history by any side to win a match by nine wickets- only Pakistan had scored more. Pakistan made 251 for one also against Australia at Rawalpindi on 22-10-1994.
  • Australia have now lost three successive matches. The last time Australia lost three successive matches against the same side was during the 2001-02 Carlton & United Series in Australia when they lost to New Zealand.
  • Chris Gayle won his eighth Man of the Match award in 75th match.
